Abdominal Hernia Mesh Demo

and Training Model

Goal

A life sciences company needed a multi-layered abdominal model with realistic texture, depth, and material to demonstrate correct placement of a new mesh designed to treat parastomal hernia. The model was needed for ongoing sales staff training and demonstration to practitioners.

Process

The client required specific layers of abdominal skin, muscle, fascia, and fat. Each layer was tuned to the client’s requirements of thickness, elasticity or rigidity, orientation, and included a cutout for demonstration of the mesh placement at the stoma opening. Starting with a clay model of the abdomen, we created the ideal size and scope of the abdomen the client needed. Once approved by the client, we then produced realistic skin, muscle, fascia and fat layers from proprietary blends of silicone and rubber. Assembly focused on appropriate layering of the materials, and securing them to the internal scaffolding inside the model to ensure the procedure could be repeated dozens of times in the field.

Results

The client successfully used more than 20 units in the field to train sales staff and surgeons on proper use and benefits of their hernia mesh repair product. Due to this success, the client has continued to order more of this model to support expanded sales training sessions.
