Goal

A manufacturer of a tooth whitening device needed a model to demonstrate accurate tooth color for before and after treatment. The client’s tooth whitening process focused on whitening the dentin of the tooth, not the surface enamel, so it was important to maintain a consistent enamel presentation and focus on dentin color change.

Process

To accurately represent the client’s tooth whitening process, it was very important to the client that the enamel remain consistent on both sides of the model. We developed a comparative model to allow the client to demonstrate detin color change for their sales and marketing teams. This involved digital design and sculpting of a premolar tooth (scaled up from life size), and developing a highly transparent 3D printing technique for the external enamel of the tooth model. We also used 3D printing for the internal dentin, allowing the client to select the “before” and “after” shades of the dentin color, in alignment with their sales and marketing goals and messaging. The entire model was 3D printed in a two-step print, with final finishing with extensive polishing.

Results

The client used the model in a variety of marketing materials, including print, video, in-person demonstrations at dental offices, and even an infomercial.
